EMBROIDERED BOOK (2015)

I found a ball of crochet thread, most likely from the 1950s, at the Santa Cruz Flea Market.  The entire book is stitched from one ball of thread, start to finish without interruption.  I stitched a drawing of the ball for the front cover, realizing that its simple beauty as an object was what had inspired me to start stitching in the first place.

Muslin, vintage variegated crochet thread.
8 inches x 8 inches x 2 inches.

I found a second ball of thread at a later flea market.  I am continuing to stitch new pieces, often in fall and winter evenings.

ZOKIN (2013)

Zokin are Japanese traditional household cleaning cloths, made by stitching through multiple layers of old cloth.

Recycled cloth, crochet cotton.

KIMONO QUILT (1992)

I made this hand-stitched quilt, based on a Shaker design, from fragments of vintage Japanese kimono fabric found at the Santa Cruz Flea Market.

Linen and bast fibers, cotton thread.
72 inches x 72 inches.
